Spotify is a popular music streaming service in India, with a large user base. The streaming service is free to use, but there is also a premium membership option. Premium Spotify customers enjoy an ad-free experience, the ability to listen to music offline, and other benefits. However, the corporation is increasingly encouraging premium subscriptions and has curtailed numerous essential functions for free members.
Spotify limits the availability of free features
According to TechCrunch, Spotify free users in India will no longer be able to play tracks in a specified order, replay songs, or return to prior songs. These features will be available only to premium subscribers. Free users can still listen to their favorite artists, albums, playlists, and receive song suggestions.
According to the article, the corporation is also changing the free tier because the market has grown. Spotify has provided these features for free since its arrival in India in 2019, but the company claims it is now time to charge for them in order to continue investing in its platform and provide a fantastic experience for all users.
In addition, Spotify has introduced a new tool called Smart Shuffle. The tool proposes tracks depending on your preferences and the song or playlist you are presently listening to. Smart Shuffle was first available to subscribers in March and is now available to all Indian customers.
Spotify restructured its Podcast division
Spotify said earlier this year that it will be restructuring its Podcast segment. The firm eliminated 200 employee positions, affecting approximately 2% of Spotify's global staff. Previously, in January of this year, the company announced the layoff of 600 employees due to "macroeconomic conditions."
In a blog post announcing the decision to lay off 200 employees in June, Sahar Elhabashi, VP and director of Spotify's podcast business, stated that "news like this is never easy" and that the firm guarantees "the utmost empathy and respect" during the process. According to the article, affected employees began receiving invitations to one-on-one meetings with HR. The business also stated that it "will support these individuals with generous severance packages, including extended healthcare coverage and immediate access to outplacement support."
Spotify is hardly the only company that has laid off employees this year. Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Google, among others, have announced mass layoffs.
