After smashing Chris Gayle's record on Wednesday, India skipper Rohit Sharma said he took a page from his book.
During India's triumph against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Rohit reached a big milestone in international cricket. The Indian captain shattered Gayle's international record for most sixes struck.
Previously, the West Indian hitter held the record with 553 sixes in 483 international matches. Sharma, on the other hand, broke this record in just 473 innings, hitting a total of 556 sixes across all formats of international cricket. This includes 297 sixes in one-day internationals, 182 in Twenty20 internationals, and 77 in Test matches.
The record-breaking six came off a Naveen Ul-Haq ball, shortly after Sharma had hit his half-century.
Speaking to the BCCI after the match, Rohit stated that he never imagined he would be able to accomplish the milestone when he first began playing and that his focus will now be on continuing his hard work.
"When I first started playing this game, I never imagined I'd be able to hit sixes, let alone so many sixes." But I never imagined myself hitting sixes like that. Obviously, a lot of effort has been put in throughout the years. So, I'm fairly pleased with the job that I've done throughout the years."
"I want to keep doing what I've been doing." So I'll concentrate on doing what I'm doing. But, yes, it's a brief pleasant time."
Rohit said he had stolen a page from Gayle's book over the years and that the West Indian would have been pleased with the feat because they both wore the same jersey number.
The Universe boss is the Universe boss. Over the years, I've taken a page from his book. He's been described as a six-hitting machine. We both wear the same number 45 jersey. So the number 45 has done it, and I'm sure he's pleased for us.
India won the match on Wednesday with a thumping victory. The Indian team won by 8 wickets after chasing down a target of 273 runs with 15 overs to spare at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Sharma was instrumental in this victory, scoring a match-winning 131 off 84 balls, including five sixes and 16 fours. His century came in just 63 balls, the fastest by an Indian batsman in a World Cup game. He was named Player of the Match for his efforts.
