New Delhi: Shahnawaz alias Shafi Ujjama, the most sought terrorist by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and two other people were detained by a special cell of the Delhi police as part of a significant raid.
Shahnawaz, a terrorist who was apprehended, was the subject of a Rs 3 lakh bounty from the anti-terror agency.
Shahnawaz, who is from a south-east Delhi neighbourhood, was also sought after in connection with the ISIS case in Pune.
Shahnawaz, an engineer by trade, had escaped from Pune police custody and was now residing in Delhi, according to ANI, citing Delhi police.
On the intervening night of 17–18 July, when Shahnawaz attempted to steal a motorbike in the Kothrud neighbourhood of Pune, Pune Police momentarily apprehended him. He escaped while being transported to his hiding place for additional interrogation.
Imran and Yunus, two of Shahnawaz's accomplices who were later apprehended by police in Pune, were discovered to be possible members of an IS-inspired cell.
Investigation revealed that Shahnawaz may have been placed in touch with Imran and Yunus in February with orders to carry out a terror attack by a handler who may have been situated overseas.
"The Delhi Police Special Cell has so far detained three people, among them Shahnawaz alias Shafi Uzzama. The module had been given the go-ahead by handlers from outside to carry out terrorist attacks in North India. Police reported that they had found evidence, including items that might have been used to make IEDs.
Additional persons have been apprehended by the Delhi Police Special Cell. According to Delhi police, the case is still being investigated further.
