Ramesh Bidhuri has been given election management responsibilities in the Tonk district of Rajasthan by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party had already sent Bidhuri a show-cause notice after he insulted Muslim BSP MP Danish Ali in the Lok Sabha, which caused a huge outcry.
Opposition politicians have condemned the action and questioned it, accusing the saffron movement of having "double standards."
According to opposition leaders, handing up control of the election despite the uproar over his remarks on Danish Ali only demonstrates that Bidhuri is getting paid for his deed.
"How does BJP give a showcaused person a new role? Attn: @narendramodi ji Is this your Sneha Yatra or your charitable work for minorities? Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool MP, remarked.
Congressman Jairam Ramesh wrote on X, "Sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas—yeh sab hai inka bakwaas."
Tonk's MLA is Sachin Pilot of the Congress.
Ramesh Bidhuri found himself at the centre of the controversy when the defence minister Rajnath Singh apologised for the remarks he made about Danish Ali.
The BJP acted quickly as well and gave him a show-cause notice. A different interpretation of the incident was provided by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who was present in the House during the argument between Bidhuri and Danish Ali. He claimed that Danish Ali incited Bidhuri by uttering some insulting remarks, a claim that Danish Ali refuted.
While the opposition leaders backed Danish, several BJP leaders called for an investigation into Danish's behaviour. One day after the event, Congressman Rahul Gandhi visited Danish at his home.
Danish Ali claimed on Wednesday that he had been receiving threatening and abusive messages as a result of the argument.
"Since the parliament incident became public last Friday, some people have been sending me hate mail and threatening to harm me. Dansih commented on X and mentioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing his hope that Delhi Police will take notice and take the proper measures.
