Canada is still dedicated to improving relations with India: in the midst of a diplomatic dispute

Even if there are "credible allegations" that New Delhi was involved in the murder of Khalistani fanatic Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada is committed to forging better ties with India.

At a press conference on Thursday in Montreal, he said, "It is crucial that Canada and its allies continue to engage with India constructively and seriously given its growing importance on the global arena.

India is a significant geopolitical player and a rising economic power. Additionally, as we have stated in our Indo-Pacific policy, we are quite serious about forging closer ties with India," said Trudeau.

However, the Prime Minister of Canada stated that in order to guarantee "we get the full facts" regarding the Nijjar homicide incident, Canada and India must cooperate. The speaker added, "At the same time, obviously, as a country that upholds the rule of law, we need to emphasise that India needs to cooperate with Canada to make sure that we have the whole facts of this situation.

"All democratic nations and all nations that uphold the rule of law must take this seriously. We are going forward with all of our partners in a deliberate, accountable manner that is rooted in the rule of law, including in our approach to the Indian government, he continued.

In the Canadian Parliament last week, Trudeau declared that his administration was looking into "credible allegations" that Indian agents were behind the murder of Nijjar in June of last year.

India reacted angrily, claiming that Trudeau's unfounded and ridiculous claims were merely intended to divert attention from Canada's support for terrorists in Khalistan.

Indian diplomat Pavan Kumar Rai, a member of the IPS's 1997 class, was expelled from Canada. India's visa services in Canada have been suspended in response to Trudeau's accusations.

Relations between India and Canada have remained tense for a while due to the proliferating Khalistan radicalism in Canada.

Earlier this month, during the G20 Summit in New Delhi, Trudeau had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
