NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad said on Saturday that the Ajit Pawar-led faction's lawyer's claim that Sharad Pawar led the party like it was his own fiefdom was antithetical to the senior leader's character. Awhad made an emotional pitch to Sharad Pawar's estranged nephew Ajit Pawar, saying the senior politician "raised you and stood by you like a rock."
"The issue is not one of technicalities and legalities; it is one of sensitivity." Sharad Pawar is the man who reared you and has been a rock for you. You stated he was running the party like a personal fiefdom; these are comments that contradict Sharad Pawar's character," Awhad said to reporters in Nagpur.
He was referring to a hearing before the Election Commission in Delhi to determine which faction could use the NCP's name and symbol. Sharad Pawar was represented during the court by veteran barrister Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Ajit Pawar was defended by lawyers NK Kaul and Maninder SIngh.
"Sharad Pawar has never done anything beyond democratic principles," he went on to say.
A substantial number of NCP leaders, led by Ajit Pawar, defied Sharad Pawar and petitioned the poll panel, claiming the party's name and symbol.
The Ajit Pawar-led group has petitioned for his election as NCP president and the use of the party's electoral emblem.
"According to the opposing group's lawyer, Sharad Pawar runs his party in an undemocratic manner, treating it as his fiefdom." Such remarks intended to win a political struggle are regrettable. "It amounts to calling Sharad Pawar's character into question," the MLA remarked.
He claimed the attorney comments based on the briefing he receives, implying Ajit Pawar's participation in having his lawyer make the declaration in court.
Ajit Pawar and eight other NCP MLAs joined the Shiv Sena-BJP administration on July 2. He then claimed to have the backing of 40 legislators.
