Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government issued a notification on Tuesday announcing 35% reservation for women in state government posts. The Madhya Pradesh government announced the 35% reservation for women after amending the Madhya Pradesh Civils Services (Special Provision for Appointment of Women) Rules, 1997. Notably, the state forest service is excluded from the new women's reservation.
"Notwithstanding anything contained in any service rules, there shall be reserved 35 percent of all posts in the service under the state (except Forest Department) in favour of women at the stage of direct recruitment and the said reservation shall be horizontal and compartment-wise," the announcement stated.
State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had previously promised that women will be given preference in the police department and other government employment, as well as 50% reservation in teaching positions. The CM also stated that women will be given preference in local bodies, and that the state government would pay for the education of girls.
Nari Shakti Vandan Adhniyam, which was enacted by Parliament, was signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu and provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly. The reservation, however, will be implemented with the new census and delimitation. The law was passed by the Lok Sabha with 454 votes in favor and two votes against it. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was passed unanimously in Rajya Sabha, with 214 MPs voting in favor and none opposed.
