India experienced significant development in the world's mobile download speed and cracked the top 50 Oookla Speedtest Global Index ranking. India surpasses numerous G20 nations and climbs 72 spots up the list to secure the 47th slot in the index.
The Seattle-based company Ookla is well-known for its data, analysis, and testing applications for fixed broadband and mobile networks. Given that this measure is used by internet service providers, carriers, corporations, colleges, and government agencies alike, India's new rating in the Speedtest measure is quite important.
India is pushing 5G, which would increase mobile download speed.
The research claims that India's achievement was made possible by the country's introduction of 5G services. Since the rollout of 5G, the nation's speed performance has increased by 3.59 times, according to the research.
From 13.87 Mbps in September 2022, the median download speeds increased to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023.
According to the Speedtest Global Index, "this improvement has led to India's rise, moving up 72 places, from the 119th place to the 47th position," the index added.
Along with surpassing Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh in the index, India also moved ahead of some other G20 countries, including Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th), and South Africa (48th).
Through operator investments in backhaul infrastructure, 5G deployments have enhanced overall user experience across all telecom circles.
The Net Promoter Score (NPS), which reveals that 5G users in India continuously rate their network providers more favourably than 4G users, demonstrates that 5G has not only brought faster speeds but also higher customer happiness.
India's mobile users are among the world's biggest consumers of data, according to Ookla. Poor 4G networks in the country, mostly as a result of network congestion and spectrum restrictions, were unable to meet expectations.
The Indian government launched 5G technology with numerous carriers, including Reliance Jio and Bharati Airtel, to address this issue. The number of 5G subscribers has significantly increased since the service's launch, and operators continue to have aggressive roll-out plans.
In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned the creation of a task force for 6G services during his Independence Day speech this year. "My nation is the one that has implemented 5G the quickest. More than 700 districts have been reached, and we are currently preparing for 6G.
