The NC-Congress Alliance sweeps the LAHDC Kargil polls, taking 22 of the 26 seats

SRINAGAR: The National Conference and Congress won 22 of the 26 seats in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council- Kargil elections. The National Conference took 12 seats, while the Indian National Congress took ten. The BJP and two independent candidates each won two seats. This was Kargil's first election since August 5, 2019. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah claimed that the BJP suffered a crushing loss at the hands of the NC-Congress combination in Kargil today.

"The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is delighted to announce its victory in the LAHDC Kargil elections in celebration of our strong alliance with the Congress party," he said. This result sends a message to all forces and parties that have partitioned the state of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh without the permission of its people in an undemocratic and unconstitutional manner. The people of Zanskar, Kargil, and Drass have strongly approved the National Conference-Congress coalition, and this triumph is theirs. We congratulate all of the newly elected councillors and appreciate their commitment to serving the people."

Leaders of the Indian National Congress also thanked the people of Ladakh and Kargil. "After ten years, we have won a resounding victory in the Ladakh-Kargil Autonomous Hill Council elections!" Together with our INDIA partner National Conference, we swept the entire region in its first election following the repeal of Art. 370. Last month's Bharat Jodo Yatra across the region by Sh. @RahulGandhi ji instilled in the people of Ladakh and Kargil the belief that the Congress and INDIA are very concerned about the difficulties they confront and the need for their democratic opinions to be heard. Congratulations to all successful candidates, and I am convinced that this will herald in a new democratic era in Ladakh and Kargil," remarked K C Venugopal, Congress General Secretary.

The National Conference also went on the offensive against the BJP.

"These election results should serve as a wake-up call for the BJP," NC leader Omar Abdullah stated. It is time to stop hiding behind the Raj Bhawan and unelected representatives and instead embrace the people of Jammu and Kashmir's legitimate aspiration for a democratically elected administration. Democracy necessitates that people's voices be heard and respected."
