Rohit Sharma breaks Kapil Dev's World Cup record for the fastest World Cup century by an Indian batter

On Wednesday, October 11, Rohit Sharma recorded the fastest century by an Indian batter in World Cup history. In India's encounter against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the skipper reached the century off 63 balls.

On June 18, 1983, the legendary Kapil Dev struck a 72-ball century against Zimbabwe at Turnbridge Wells' Nevill Ground.

for India was set to chase down 273, Rohit immediately went for the Afghan bowling. The right-handed hitter reached his half-century off 30 balls as India scored 94 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay.

Even when the field had spread out, Rohit continued to target the opposing bowlers. Rohit smacked Mujeeb Ur Rahman for two fours in the 14th over, one through short fine and the other through mid off.

Rohit, 36, reached the 90s by taking a double off Rashid Khan via the backward square leg region.

Previously, Rohit became the fourth Indian hitter to reach 1000 runs or more in the World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Sourav Ganguly are the other three batters.

In the match against Afghanistan, Rohit also surpassed Ganguly as India's top World Cup run-scorer. Rohit needed only 28 runs to dethrone the old captain, and he did so without breaking a sweat.

Rohit also broke Sachin Tendulkar's World Cup record for the most hundreds. With seven hundreds to his name, the Nagpur-born batsman surpassed Tendulkar, who had six hundreds from 45 matches from 1992 to 2011.

When India faced Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Rohit got a duck. But he has unquestionably made atonement with the Afghans.
