On Wednesday morning, the Nanded Rural police in Maharashtra filed a first information report (FIR) against Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil after he allegedly forced Dr Shyamrao Wakode, the acting dean of the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital, to clean a toilet. After 31 deaths were recorded at the hospital, Patil allegedly pushed the dean to clean the toilets.
The police will now take Patil's statement and proceed as necessary.
Patil was charged with criminal intimidation and defamation under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, according to a police officer.
Patil and his assistants allegedly recorded the deed while forcing Dr. Wakode to clean the toilet. This video was later posted and went viral on social media, showing the MP directing the dean to clean the toilet.
"You don't have simple mugs in the restroom, and you yell at people who don't use the restroom." "Do you doctors and dean act similarly at home?" Patil allegedly stated. Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital was the site of the tragedy.
On Tuesday, Vanchit Bahujan Samaj spokesperson Farrooq Ahmed and his party members protested the atrocities committed on Dr Wakode and sought police action against the MP.
Patil has been charged with violating IPC sections 353 (assault or criminal force to prevent a public worker from doing his duties), 506 (penalty for criminal intimidation), 500 (punishment for defamation), and 34 (acts done by multiple people in furtherance of a common objective).
According to a police officer, he was also charged under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act sections 3(1)(s), 3(1)(r), 3(1)(u), 3(1)(m), and 3(2)(va), as well as Section 4 of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010.
