Deepak Punia loses to hero Hasan Yazdani in the men's 86kg final at the Asian Games 2023

Deepak Punia of India won a silver medal in the men's 86kg category at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, where he competed against the fearsome Iranian wrestler Hasan Yazdani on Saturday. This concluded India's wrestling effort in the tournament, which resulted in six medals but no gold.

Deepak Punia found himself competing against Hasan Yazdani, a two-time Olympic champion and eight-time World Championship medalist, his childhood idol. Deepak reached the final of the 2019 World Championships but was unable to wrestle Yazdani due to a foot ailment, settling for a silver medal.

Deepak Punia was unable to score in the final against Hasan Yazdani, who gained a commanding 8-0 lead in the first period. Yazdani's dominance continued throughout the second period, culminating in the battle being called off early as he defended his title.

India won six medals in wrestling at the Asian Games, with Deepak Punia taking silver. Sunil Kumar (87kg), Antim Panghal (53kg), Sonam Malik (62kg), Aman Sehrawat (57kg), and Kiran Bishnoi (76kg) were among the other Indian medalists. Notably, India failed not win a gold medal at the Asian Games this year.

While Deepak Punia excelled in his preliminary matches, other Indian wrestlers such as Yash Tunir (74kg), Vicky (97kg), and Sumit Malik (125kg) failed not get to the medal rounds. The most major disappointment was Bajrang Punia's defeat the day before.

India won three medals in the 2018 Asian Games, including two gold medals from Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat.

Deepak Punia encountered some obstacles in the men's 86kg category, but he improved with each bout. In the qualification round, he defeated Bahrain's Magomed Sharipov 3-2, followed by a technical victory over Indonesia's Randa Riandesta. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Japan's Shirai Shota 7-3. Deepak faced a tough opponent in the semifinals in Uzbekistan's Javrail Shapiev, but won 4-3.

After defeating Cambodia's Chheang Chhoeun in the pre-quarterfinals, Yash Tunir endured a technical defeat by Tajikistan's Magomet Evloev. Vicky's run in the competition ended with a loss to Kazakhstan's Alisher Yergali, while Sumit Malik was eliminated after losing by technical superiority to Kyrgyzstan's Aiaal Lazarev.
