'Why didn't she say this earlier?' I wondered during the Asian Games. On Swapna Barman's claims of transgender behaviour, Nandini Agasara

HANGZHOU: After Nandini Agasara won the bronze medal in the women's heptathlon at the 2018 Asian Games in China, Swapna Barman made serious accusations against the latter. As a result of the uproar that followed, Swapna was compelled to remove the post she had made on X (formerly Twitter) in which she claimed Nandini was transsexual.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has not yet issued an official statement, but reports claim that whenever she arrives in India, Swapna would be required to do so.

In response to the accusations against Swapna, Nandini said, "I don't understand what's the problem with her (Swapna)?

The heptathlon gold medalist at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Swapna, said in the since-deleted post: "I have lost my Asian Games medal to a transgender woman at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. Given that it is against our athletics' rules, I want my medal returned. Please support and assist me.

Barman fell to fourth place (5708 points) in the final standings as a result of Nandini's bronze medal performance, which was her personal best with 5712 points.

"I question her allegations' timeliness. Why didn't she bring up the allegations sooner? Nandini enquired.

"She didn't start bringing up the transgender issue until after I earned the bronze medal for my unwavering effort and dedication. This is just unfair.I appreciate the support I have received from the government and my federation, said Nandini.

Nandini began her sporting career in 2018. Her mother works as a housekeeper and her father owns a tea business, therefore she comes from a modest upbringing.
