The assassination of two students sparked new rioting in Manipur, thus the union home ministry recalled senior Srinagar police official Rakesh Balwal to the northeastern state on Thursday. This occurs over a month after the home ministry suggested that extra officials be sent to Manipur due to the state of the law and order there.
"The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for premature repatriation of Shri Rakesh Balwal, IPS from AGMUT cadre to Manipur cadre," stated a notification.
Notably, the IPS officer assigned to Jammu and Kashmir is from the Manipur cadre. He assumed control of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) position in Srinagar in 2021. In 2018, he completed a four-year stint as the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) Superintendent of Police. Balwal was a member of the committee that looked into the 2019 terror attack in Pulwama.
In Manipur, two students were slain.
On Tuesday, Manipur experienced further outbreaks of violence following the deaths of two Meitei students who had been missing since July. The images of the two youngsters went popular on social media not long after the mobile internet capabilities were reinstated.
The couple may have eloped on July 6 but were allegedly abducted and murdered after being stuck in a Kuki community-dominated area while fleeing, according to the preliminary investigation, which was conducted by the Manipur police. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now been given the case.
Due to this occurrence, locals and students protested in the streets and engaged in combat with law enforcement and members of the Rapid Action Force (RAF). According to reports, 25 to 30 protesters were hurt.
Due to this, the state government in the violent state on Tuesday once again put a five-day ban on mobile internet services.
